Prof Henk Wegstapel - Canterbury Christ Church University, Canterbury, UK

Prof Henk Wegstapel speaks to ecancer at the 2019 International Gastrointestinal, Liver and Uro-Oncology Conference (IGILUC) in Cairo about the treatment of rectal cancers from a surgical perspective.

Prof Wegstapel describes the multi-disciplinary landscape of rectal cancer surgery to ensure each patient receives a tailored treatment.

He also discusses the challenges in the surgical procedure and how these must be tailored to gain full access to the tumour and to reduce the complication rate.

For the future, a better understanding of the tumour is needed - particularly on a microscopic level due to the diverse nature of bowel cancer.
